With zero plastic, we’ll make a happier planet

In Grupo Xcaret, we are taking new actions for the benefit of the environment

For 2020, we have traced a clear goal: to stop using single-serving plastic items. As a leading company in sustainable tourism recreation, we are executing a complete transition plan to reduce this type of materials in all of our Parks, Tours and Hotels.

The goal is to stop generating 1,896,068 PET plastic bottles and reduce more than 18,000 pounds of waste. The solid actions we are putting into place are:

  • The installation of more than 50 drinking fountains in all the Parks of the group, which will serve both visitors and coworkers.
  • Providing plastic thermoses to our coworkers to encourage the use of a single bottle to refill at the drinking fountains.
  • The substitution of plastic bags with reusable canvas bags.
  • A 100% plastic bottle reduction in the company’s daily operations.
  • The offer of aluminum straws in different Grupo Xcaret shopping points.

In addition, we will make an effort to create awareness among coworkers, visitors, purveyors, and Quintana Roo society by making an analogy between the amount of time we take when using plastic products and the amount of time it takes for them to disintegrate, and compare it with the use of reusable or biodegradable products.

Other sustainable initiatives by Grupo Xcaret

For several years, straws and food containers at Grupo Xcaret have been 100% biodegradable and elaborated with materials made from avocado seeds or sugar cane husks (from completely sustainable crops).

In a similar way, in 2018 we recycled 81% of the organic and inorganic waste generated at the Parks, Tours and Hotel Xcaret México. This was due thanks in part to the work done in the collection centers located at the different business units where trash and waste are separated to recycle the highest amount possible and reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.

Likewise, since its first year of operations, Hotel Xcaret México eliminated the use of products made from non-degradable materials and established that any disposable item used in the Hotel’s daily operations needed to be made from compostable and degradable materials, such as the coffee capsules used by the coffee makers inside the suites and the coffee break services, which are made by corn starch.

In total, we are complying with 65 programs, projects and good social responsibility practices, placing us ahead in sustainability topics, adopting solutions for the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
